The grout joint – the small space that separates tiles – may seem like a small detail, but it makes an important impact. A joint can be practically invisible or highly visible, depending on the style and the technical recommendation.
A necessary minimum of joint
A minimal width of joint is recommended between tiles. The width of the joint will vary according to the type of tile, pressed or flat extruded.
Pressed tiles require a minimal width of joint of about 2 mm.
Flat extruded tiles require a grout joint of about 5 or 6 mm.
Vertical extruded tiles require a grout joint of between 8 and 10 mm., as do terracotta or hand-made clay tiles.
Possible looks
If you are looking for a rustic style, you can use a wider joint width than what is recommended to achieve a traditional ambience.
If you are looking for a minimalist, modern style, choose a grout that is the same color as the tile, as well as the finest grain possible.
If you like contrasts, look for a color that is different from the tile, for a striking effect.
